Fairey Rotodyne

British compound gyroplane from the 50′s that, interestingly, used small jet engines located on the tips of the rotor blades to drive the main rotor, which only activated during vertical take-offs and landings, hovering and slow speed flight, the rest of the time auto-rotating while the main engines took control of forward flight. 

A promising concept, it was sadly cancelled mainly due to lack of interest from airlines, her main market, as the wingtip propulsion made her one of the noisiest aircraft ever made, creating fears of airport restrictions, at the time nonexistent, for her operation, not to mention passenger discomfort.
