The IBM Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) computer system, brought online in 1958 to direct the US radar and missile defense network. Consisting of 20 separate mammoth computer installations, each using 60,000 vacuum tubes housed in a 1 acre building, SAGE was easily the largest and most complex computer in the world.
