Why would they buy all the live ammunition? Were they unloading it to make blank rounds? Is that more cost effective than just hiring a company that specializes is blank firing weapons to work some magic?

5.7 ammo is extremely fucking weird and no third-party brass casings exist. They also have a sort of thin film polymer on the surface to assist extraction, because the P90 is actually direct blowback operated for some fucking reason.
So yes, physically pulling the projectiles out of live rounds really was the most effective way to make blank ammo.

and I know they picked the P90 because the way the things eject brass meant they could group the actors closer together for more tight shots.
