The Shanks sorta-beard bc there were worries he and Browder had too similar a build and might be confusing for the audience, turned out to be unfounded and he progressively trimmed it back down.
(iirc the commentary, which i don’t have for this version, shanks listed his options as growing his hair out again or trying a beard).
For a while there wasn’t going to be a 9th season of SG-1, it was going to be a new show with Ben Browder called Stargate Command. The name didn’t stick but this line from the script did.
