We didn’t want the audience, especially the younger audience, to think that 1962 Las Vegas was a place where you had a lot of black people sitting in the audience at nightclubs, or enjoying themselves at hotels and casinos. That just didn’t happen. So by having someone of Sisko’s historical understanding questioning that fact, we could clarify before we got him to Vic’s that he’s well aware that Vegas was very, very, very white. For those in the DS9 fandom, I just came across the above clip recently even though it's been around for 10 years. And it's the cleanest version I've ever seen of the moment when Sisko sang a duet with Vic Fontaine.
This episode was so much fun. DS9 was the Trek series that had entire episodes dedicated to a wedding, a grudge match baseball game, and a casino heist caper. And we're talking about these being the main plot rather than the B story in an episode.
