Charlie goes into the trunk of his car, takes off his ¾ lengh in favor of a light jacket (and a gun) but what the coat would…trip him? or look to p.i.-ey?
“Cape City, a real company town. Vexcor’s town.”
You know I don’t think the voice over narration was on here originally. I could be misremembering.
I love the feeling of Cape City (Cape Town in Alpha Verse (digression Alpha, Beta, Gamma Verse, we’re Beta, and the dystopian neo-noir is Alpha)) green tint, perpetual clouds, hyperurban with cyberpunk elements.
I’m rewatching Charlie Jade, it’s been far too long. I’ve talked about it before: It starts off noir and a bit of a Blade Runner feel (ok a bit of a rip off even but that goes to FM Le Sieur’s awesome score) goes beyond that start and gives us a truly wonderful 1-season series by the end. 2005 Canadian/South African Co-Production shot and set in Cape Town. Many, MANY of FRINGE’s story elements can be found here and at this stage I don’t want to name them all. I watched it during its initial run but got cut off at episode 17 when I moved to the states, finished it a few months later when my mom sent me the tapes. SyFy Channel picked it up years later, did almost zero marketing for it and after 2 episodes moved it from prime time to 2AM so it never really got a fair chance down there.
I feel like a one-person fandom on this and it doesn’t help that the series shares its name with a clothing line so good luck finding much else on tumblr that doesn’t come from me (there’s some but few and far between).
Another thing that doesn’t help is that, last I checked, Japan is the only country that had a DVD release (and is the rip I’m using now, which splits the premiere into two episodes, kind of messing up the flow by placing the opening credits that were absent in that premiere right in the middle of the initial narration).
Anyway, y'all should watch it, even tho the first image I’m giving you in a while is a watermelon with an umbrella. That umbrella just travelled a couple of parallel worlds…
