Uncovered, Dillon Marsh

artist statement: Combining photography and CGI, I represented the total volume of material extracted from various mines around South Africa.

This image shows the Palabora mine. At almost 2km wide and over 800m deep, it is the largest open pit in the country. An impressive 4.1 million tonnes of copper was extracted here to date, but this total is dwarfed by the massive hole.
