Sometimes I wish that had happened a bit more in Voyager where one of the mains said to Janeway that talking about “career” like they’re in a normal situation feels very hollow when they really don’t know if they’ll ever get home before they die and when half of the crew thinks that everything Starfleet stands for is bullshit.

Honestly I think that the rank structure should have broken down entirely by the end of the second season; but I also know that, even if Berman and/or UPN hadn’t been allergic to serialisation, they would never have gone for the optics of Star Trek’s first female captain losing her authority in that manner.
