Times Square at night, ca. 1923. The view is from 45th and Broadway, looking north. On the left is the old Astor Theater, which was at 1537 Broadway. It was demolished in 1982 to make way for the barren and soulless Marriott Marquis Hotel. Click/tap to enlarge.

Captain Wolfgang Von Gronau of Germany and three companions made their farewell flight in their seaplane over Manhattan on September 10, 1930. They had traveled 4,670-miles from Germany to New York in nine days, by way of the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, and Nova Scotia, spending 47 hours in the air. Their flight proved that airplanes were viable for traveling long distances. They were much feted in the city, with teas, dinners, and honorary film showings.
