my most controversial ship? heh...the Thomas W Lawson
you like that? I got more, how bout the SS Bessemer
This experimental piece o' shit, courtesy of Sir Henry Bessemer, had a stabilized cabin meant to combat seasickness. Unfortunately, due to the kinetic consequences of building a ship like that, it also combatted seaworthiness, and the instant this thing touched water it enthusiastically slammed itself into the pier with all the grace of a twelfth round boxer.
Not to be deterred, Bessemer repaired the ship, hired a veteran sea captain, slapped the stern and sent her out for a second go. The ship then proceeded to crash into the Same Fucking Pier even harder, demolishing it.
The SS Bessemer, her bloodlust satiated, retired from the cruise ship life and settled down in Swanley, where she became a billiard room, and then a lecture hall, and then rubble, due to an encounter with bombs.
This one's for the SS Bessemer. Rest in peace you wild bitch.
New problematic ship just dropped.
(To be fair there was nothing wrong with the Thomas W Lawson as such. But the Bessemer... nuts).
A chaser gun was mounted on both the bow and stern of most ships. Depending on the ship, two to four mostly light guns were usually mounted on deck. They were used to slow down an enemy ship that was either pursuing or being pursued when the broadside of the ship could not be brought to bear. Chasers were used to try to damage the rigging and thereby weaken the target.
VÊtÊran escaping into the shallow waters of Concarneau harbour, by Michel Bouquet (1807-1890) Here you can see how she fires her stern chasers (x)
Early chasers of the 16th and 17th century brought up from the gundeck and aimed through specially cut-out ports on either side of the bowsprit, or dedicated weapons made with an unusually long bore and a relatively light ball, and mounted in the bow. Stern chasers could also be improvised, or left permanently in the cabins at the stern, covered up and used as part of the furniture.
From the 18th century onwards the chasers were light 9.pdr guns mounted on the maindeck.
Said of a Sailor who found God's word, the inference being his soul was (like a ship in dry dock) being repaired and fitted out to better serve his master.
Divine service as it is usually performed on board a British frigate at sea, by August Earle , 1836 (x)
Ironically, it was also slang for hospitalized sailors being treated for venereal disease.
The Triumph and Ark Royal 1592, by Tony Bryan in: Tudor Warships 2, by Angus Konstam
Here we see, two of the most powerful ships in the Elizabethan Navy Royal. The Triumph was a galleon with 46 guns, built in 1561. Ark Royal was build in 1587 as a race galleon. She had 38 guns, which made her less powerful than the Triumph, but she was very manoeuvrable and fast, which compensated the lack of power. During the Armada campaign she served as the fleet flagship.
On May 12, 1918, the biggest F you by a Ocean liner was given to a sub.
U-103 was prepared to launch torpedoes from her stern tubes at HMT Olympic but was unable to flood the torpedo tubs. The crew of liner saw the u-boat lined to fire and changed direction to ram. The crew of the U-103 tried to dive but it was too late. Her bow struck the conning tower and her proprellers sliced threw the pressure hull. The u-boat crew immediately surfaced and the crew abandoned ship. 9 lost their lives during the incident. The Olympic did not pick up the 35 survivors, but continued on her course to Cherbourg, France. They were later picked up by USS Davis (DD-65) and taken to Milford Haven, England
Sunbathers and carriers. First ship is Bulwark or Albion, second is HMAS Melbourne? And the third
must be Ark Royal I believe judging by the Type 984. Not sure if the
picture is taken from Eagle or Victorious, can’t remember if Victorious flew
Buccaneers or not.
