#This is what a captain looked like!#All that gold braid was important because it showed your rank#and they were actually required to wear it#not wearing it was considered cowardly because you would be hiding among the middies without it#and enemy snipers would be looking for officers so you were a prime target#also it was really expensive and a lot of officers complained about the expense#so there was a market for used uniform coats and trim#which makes total sense#imagine you are a widow and your husband is killed in battle#you could sell the trim or give it to your son who is probably also in the navy…#like that just makes good financial sense (via cinemaocd)
