Reggimento di Carignano-Salières - Règiment de Carignan-Salières (Carignan-Salières Regiment)

The regiment was formed in 1636 by c. 1,200 volunteers of Piedmont, Liguria and Savoy (at that time under the Kingdom of Piedmont) in command of Tommaso Francesco di Savoia-Carignano, a cadet of the Savoia (Savoy) Royal family. The regiment began to serve Louis XIV, King of France, since it was merged with the French Salières Regiment in 1656 and sent to Nouvelle-France (New France) in America, in command of French officers, to help the development of the French colonies. About 450 of them remained in America, with land and money granted by the Kingdom of France.

Savoy and part of Piedmont spoke (and speak to this day) French language or French dialects.

Carignano is a delightful town south of Torino (Turin).
