Here’s my favorite part of the article:

“A preliminary investigation found the 24-year-old driver of a 2003 Dodge Durango was traveling east on W 12th St. when he failed to obey a stop sign at the intersection with Pine Ave.

The vehicle then went airborne, according to police, striking a Nissan Rogue parked in front of a home — sending both vehicles colliding into the structure.”

I feel like there’s some key information missing between these two paragraphs. How did we go from skipping a stop sign to going airborne?

If W 12th St is at a downward incline, and the house the Durango flew into is at the bottom of the hill, then the intersection with Pine Ave would probably be leveled off, mostly.  So if the Durango didn’t stop, it would’ve gone flying off the hill and through the air, smashing into the Rogue and then the house.

Off to the Google-mobile to search for corroboration! *typing noises*

It’s not clear how the Nissan became airborne.

Okay, fiddlesticks.  I wonder what Google maps has to say about this…

Okay, so that’s the intersection in question (this is in Waynesboro, VA, BTW).  So it looks like 12th St does hit Pine Ave on a T-intersection, so the Durago runs the stop straight into the house.  Theory looks good so far.

This is the street view looking up 12th.  It is on a downward incline!

And this is the view looking to the house that got hit.  Slight curb on the edge of the road as well.

My conclusion is that the Durago probably hit that little curb going way too fast and that, in combination with already going downhill, is what got it off the ground.  Since there is a second incline from Pine going down to the house, that probably contributed.
